If you want to drive a vehicle in Kentucky, you need to learn about no-fault insurance. This is because Kentucky is a no-fault state. So, what does this mean anyway? When you live in a no-fault state, your auto insurance covers things such as medical bills, lost wages and some other expenses that are the result of an accident, no matter who is at fault for the accident. Whether you choose to have full coverage or just the minimum amount that is required by the state, you will be required to include Kentucky no-fault insurance coverage in your insurance policy.

Kentucky became a no-fault state on July 1, 1975. This act was initiated to make sure that victims of auto accidents received insurance benefits as quickly as possible, including payment for medical treatment and rehabilitation if needed, and lost wages if victims are unable to work up to a certain period of time.

What Does Kentucky No-Fault Insurance Cover?

Kentucky no-fault insurance, also referred to as PIP or personal injury protection insurance pays for medical expenses and lost wages. “Medical expenses” is actually a pretty broad term, and many things are covered by this type of insurance coverage. If you are the victim in an auto accident and you are injured badly enough to require hospitalization, this will be paid for by your insurance. Your prescription costs are usually covered, as well as any expenses for rehabilitation. You may require follow-up medical appointments or visits to a rehabilitation clinic, and your mileage to and from these appointments will be paid. Often it is necessary to pay these costs up front and then be reimbursed by your insurance company.

Kentucky no-fault insurance does not pay to repair damages to your vehicle. If you want to have this type of coverage, your insurance policy will need to include property damage, collision and comprehensive coverage. If you decide to have this type of coverage, you will want to choose a full coverage insurance policy that includes no-fault insurance.

How Much Coverage Do You Get with Kentucky No-Fault Insurance?

You must carry a certain amount of Kentucky no-fault insurance. The minimum amount of liability coverage that you must have is $25,000/$50,000, which will pay for injuries from an accident. You will also have $10,000 in property damage coverage. You can have a single limit policy if it is a minimum of $60,000. The Kentucky Driver’s Manual states that all drivers must have at least $10,000 in no-fault personal injury insurance coverage.

Don’t Pay Too Much for Auto Insurance

What are you currently paying for your auto insurance? Are you getting the best rates available? If you have not shopped around recently and gotten quotes from other insurers, you will never know. Whether you are getting a new insurance policy or you simply want to see what other insurers are offering, you need to get quotes from local and national insurance companies. Give us your zip code, and we’ll search our data bases to get all the quotes you need to get the best deal on Kentucky no-fault insurance.
